After some back pain and paper cuts we can finally reveal the AGDA poster we’ve been working on. Many thanks to DCA photography student Kirsty McPhee, who kindly came in on her time off to shoot the finished piece. It was great to actually get away from the computer and get my hands dirty! The final printed poster turned out swell and was well received at the Analogue/Digital Creative Conference. Keep an eye out for them throughout universities and colleges!

Last Tuesday night the Queensland Music Awards rocked the Old Museum in Brisbane's Bowen Hills. Up and coming artists donned the stage with hip hop beats and bass thumping rock.

Finalist | Queensland Premier's Design Awards 2011

The Queensland Premier's Design Awards are a key initiative of the Queensland Design Strategy 2020. The Awards celebrate industry leaders and are dedicated to growing the design sector and improving community understanding of, and value for, good design and design thinking.

Tanja was a recent finalist of the Smart State Design Fellowship Award which recognises an individual who has significantly contributed to developing a design culture within Queensland.

In addition to her role as Director of JOLT, Tanja is serving her fourth year as Queensland President of AGDA (Australian Graphic Design Association) and is also serving on the AGDA National Council. Through her voluntary contribution with AGDA, Tanja has had the opportunity to foster and inspire ethical and excellent standards within the design community and to advocate and promote good design to the wider public. Tanja championed the successful bid to host OPTIMISM: Icongrada Design Week in Brisbane in 2010 which attracted 1800 local, interstate and international visitors and showcased leading international themes, thinking and trends within the communications design sector.

Finally my excuse to use Letterpress! Bespoke Letterpress helped me out with this surprise gift for my husband’s birthday. He is an avid collector of vintage bourbons and whiskeys and loves the art of letterpress, so the idea seemed obvious! Personalised coasters were something that he could appreciate, use and keep. I had tonnes of fun designing such a personal gift and also look forward to working with Bespoke Letterpress again.

Giant installation

This clever installation is more than just for show...

Property developer Land Securities had a conundrum. It needed to divide up a vast floor space in London so that agents could show prospective tenants that there were four clear and distinct areas for office space. It's safe to assume that most would section off the space with boring signs or makeshift walls. In fact, no one would expect a creative alternative like this.

Queenslake

Queenslake is a celebration of Queensland talent, creativity and craft.

Featuring work from a range of Queensland's leading designers and illustrators, Queenslake is an exhibition of letterpress prints to raise money for the relief effort, with all profits donated to The Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal. The prints will be sold for $50 each, in numbered runs of 50.

Show your support at Kerbside (Constance Street, Fortitude Valley) from 6 to 9pm on Thursday 3 March and buy a limited edition print for a good cause.

Brisbane was the centre of attention in the music world when BIGSOUND drew their largest ever crowds in September. With over 90 speakers, 60 live acts and 540 delegates, the music conference and showcase impressed the likes of international recording and management companies, magazines and newspapers as well as the musicians themselves.

It has been exciting to be a part of the BIGSOUND journey and we're already counting down till next year.

Welcome Sarah!

It has been almost five months since the arrival of our new JOLTie. She plays cards, likes pina coladas and dancing in the rain so we've welcomed her with open arms.

Sarah Gannon (fondly nicknamed GeeGee) started at JOLT in July and hit the ground running. Her huge help throughout Icograda Design Week showed us she has what it takes to be a JOLTie.

She's definitely a keeper!

What a fabulous week in Vancouver at Design Currency: Icograda Design Week last month! Congratulations to all involved in organising a fantastic event which focussed on defining the value of design.

Design Currency 2010 included a silent auction of donated design items which raised funds towards the Architecture for Humanity Haiti reconstruction project.

How lucky do we feel to have successfully bid for this beautiful poster by Marian Bantjes, designer and typographic illustrator from Canada. Titled 'Design ignites change', this is one of a series of posters to promote the importance of design in development work for the Academy for Educational Development, a Vancouver based international non-profit.

Lovely, lovely fashion!

When Brookside Shopping Centre asked us to create promotional items for their 'Fashion at your Fingertips' workshops it called for something special. A beautiful fashion illustration was required to publicise this unique event. Talented illustrator Monique Kneepkens created a 'fingerprint' pattern to adorn the wardrobe of a beautiful watercolour model, layering real images of bags and belts and even going so far as to scan her own leg to add texture to the pretty girl's tights. Now that's real dedication and provided an extraordinary result!

Congratulations to our client RiverCity Motorway Group on the opening of the CLEM7 tunnel! At 10pm last night the boom gate went up and drivers honked their horns as they began their journey under Brisbane! Since then it has been reported that over 5000 cars have passed through the CLEM7 in its first eight hours of operation.

We've thoroughly enjoyed working with the RiverCity Motorway Group on this historic event and we think everyone's hard work has certainly paid off.

'Coming Together' to benefit Haiti

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the Society of Typographic Aficionados issued a call to action to the typographic and design communities to participate in Font Aid IV. The result was 'Coming Together', an OpenType font that contains over 400 ampersand glyphs designed by participants from around the world. All proceeds from the sale of the typeface go to Doctors Without Borders, in support of continuing relief efforts in Haiti.

Close to 400 people from 37 countries submitted an ampersand design to this font. A full list of contributors is available on The Society of Typographic Aficionados website www.typesociety.org/fontaid.html

Uniting Designers in Disaster

Uniting Designers in Disaster is an open forum for designers of all disciplines to come together with ideas and initiatives to help address the current crisis in Haiti.

In support of the UN’s efforts to help the Haitian people overcome challenges in relation to the country’s reconstruction plans, designers, academics and design students, as well as experienced developmental workers are encouraged to join the discussion.

This initiative has been launched with the support of Icsid, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design. This global not-for-profit organisation promotes better design around the world and strives to create a world where design enhances our social, cultural, economic and environmental quality of life.

Bringing paper to life

The K.W. Doggett Fine Paper 2010 calendar pays homage to the use of paper and its endless creative possibilities: tear, scrunch, rip, fold, twist and shred it, then recycle it!

Wall and Piece - Banksy

A new book arrival has gotten us a little excited in the JOLT office. Wall and Piece is a compilation of work by notorious graffiti artist, Banksy. This is his fourth book (a compilation of his first three) that shows his infamous satirical view on politics, culture and ethics. It's a very interesting read as he shares details about how his art is achieved and how long they last before they are removed.

Banksy is a cult figure in the world of art and pop culture and I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys artists that cross boundaries whilst poking fun at the political world.

Wintergarden Spring/Summer

Wintergarden is a high end retail destination celebrating the best in Australian fashion. JOLT is commissioned twice yearly to create hero images that capture the essence of the season.

This Spring/Summer 09, our brief was to produce images that reflect the uniqueness of the Wintergarden retail offer and the season's key trends. Full of blazing desert colours, sultry jungle prints, fluid maxi frocks, slim suits and cheeky hemlines, JOLT art directed this photoshoot using a splash of colour with punch and personality. Behind the scenes the genius photographer and team worked their magic at a million miles an hour and models were transformed to create a hot, party chic vibe.

Annual Reports - Printed vs Emailed

Sending Annual Reports by email is not as environmentally effective as it appears. In Australia in 2006 1.6 million computers went into landfill, each containing over 1,000 components!

Australians consume approx. 200kgs of paper per head per annum, which is the average of OECD countries, and well below the North Americans, Japanese and Scandinavians. Interestingly enough, 200kgs of paper consumption per head, per annum, equates to the equivalent of 72kgs of CO2 emissions, which by way of example compares to operating a plasma television five hours per day for six days per week, or 450kgs per annum.

In reality, paper is very much an environmentally sustainable product, manufactured by an environmentally sustainable industry. Whilst it would be hard to imagine a world without computers, it is worth commenting on some aspects of the globally recognized looming issue of E-waste.

It may seem expedient to produce reports and printed collateral on line, but it is worth considering the amount of energy (power) required to print out ONE A4 page, single-sided, on a laser or inkjet printer in the office or home.

This act alone consumes the same amount of power it would take to PRINT 100 A4 pages (in colour) both sides, on a heat-set, web offset printing press. From a “green” perspective on energy use (most of which comes from coal-fired power stations) it makes more environmental sense to print annual reports than to electronically transfer information.

Event: Kris Sowersby

Last week I had the opportunity to see typographer Kris Sowersby speak at an event by AGDA. Kris is the founder of Klim Type Foundry, which is currently based in Wellington, New Zealand. He has created some beautiful typefaces for a variety of clients, such as Serrano for BNZ, Hardys and Methven Flow for Methven.

The presentation was great - Kris explained his process and showed many examples of his work. It was a very interesting talk and has inspired me to focus more on typography!

We've designed something!

Recently, we've had the opportunity to work on an event for AGDA. After reading about the event 'Talking Design' I considered the theme – progressive change. Embracing this, I wanted to create a very military / communist feel. With the help of my good friend Google I found some great propaganda posters for inspiration as well as a kick ass font – Russian. Soon after, it developed into a modern propaganda poster, with great structure, power and balance!

Now we can look forward to printing some small badges for the event, thanks to Mel :)
